THE EXPEDITION Surfing Fiji by yacht
The Mamanuca reefs off Viti Levu's west coast hold seven world class breaks within minutes of one another: Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Namotu Left, Wilkes, Swimming Pools and Desperations around the islands of Tavarua and Namotu, and Frigates Passage off Beqa on the south coast. From a resort you surf on their schedule and their boat. From a yacht you surf on the tide, move between passes as the wind swings, and come back to a chef and a hot shower rather than a transfer.
The reefs sit thirty to forty five minutes by boat from Port Denarau, but the yacht spends the swell window at anchor in the lee of Namotu or Tavarua, at Musket Cove on Malolo Lailai, or on the sand patches inside the Cloudbreak reef in settled weather. Dawn at Cloudbreak is a ten minute tender ride, and Wilkes, Swimming Pools and Namotu Left are two to five minutes apart.
Water is 24 to 29 degrees through the year, the south east trades blow offshore at most of the lefts from May to October, and the biggest swells arrive out of the Tasman Sea in the southern winter. No wetsuit, no crowd at first light, and a proper bed at the end of it.

Minutes apart
The Mamanuca passes are two to ten minutes from one another by tender. Frigates is a day's passage south.
On the tide
Low tide barrels at Restaurants, mid tide at Namotu, high tide at Wilkes. The yacht moves with the day.
Everyone else
Snorkelling, the Yasawas, the Beqa shark dive, the sea pool and the eFoils. The non surfers have their own week.

APRIL TO OCTOBER
The swell season runs April to October, with June to September the largest and most consistent months. Winter lows in the Tasman Sea send long period south west swell straight at the Mamanuca reefs, and the east south east trades that dominate from May to October blow offshore at Cloudbreak, Restaurants and Namotu Left, side or onshore at the rights. Summer, November to April, is the wet season and the cyclone season: lighter, variable winds and flat water most days.
Impulsive is in Fijian waters from July to September, the heart of the window.
Winter swells out of the Tasman Sea. June to September see seventy to eighty percent swell days.
One of the best waves on the planet
CLOUDBREAK The wave
The World Championship Tour has come here since 1999. Kelly Slater has won more events at Cloudbreak than anyone, the tour returned in 2024 after a six year absence, and in September 2025 the world titles were decided here at the Lexus WSL Finals. The 2026 Fiji Pro finished on 3 September with Cole Houshmand and Erin Brooks the winners, and the tour is committed to Fiji through 2029.
The day surfers still talk about is 8 June 2012, when the Volcom Fiji Pro was called off after two heats as the swell climbed from ten to twelve feet in the morning to fifteen and twenty by late afternoon. The contest stopped; the surfing did not. Ramon Navarro, Reef McIntosh, Mark Healey and Ian Walsh paddled into waves that ended up in the film Thundercloud.
Access to Cloudbreak and the surrounding breaks has been open to anyone with a board and a boat since Fiji's Regulation of Surfing Areas Decree of 2010. In August 2026 Parliament passed the Commercial Use of Marine Areas Bill, which returns commercially used reefs to their customary owners once it commences and may bring user fees. Arrangements for your dates are handled by the crew and the central agent.

BEYOND THE SURF Mamanucas and Yasawas
Close to the surf: the lagoons of Malolo and Mana, the Cloud 9 floating bar on Roro Reef, Monuriki where Cast Away was filmed, and Musket Cove with its marina and marine sanctuary. North through the Yasawas: the Blue Lagoon anchorage at Matacawalevu and the limestone caves of Sawa-i-Lau, a sunlit outer chamber and an inner cave reached by a swim through at high tide, with a village guide.
On the south coast, the Shark Reef Marine Reserve in Beqa Lagoon is one of the great shark dives in the world: bull sharks in numbers, tawny nurse, silvertip, grey reef and lemon sharks, and the occasional tiger, with licensed operators who have run the site for more than thirty years. It pairs naturally with a session at Frigates Passage on the same passage south.
Fiji requires foreign flagged charter yachts to clear in at Lautoka, Suva or, by prior arrangement, Port Denarau, twenty minutes from Nadi airport. Guests join and leave the yacht at Denarau, or by helicopter to the anchorage.

For an experienced group, swap the Yasawa days for a passage south to Beqa: Frigates Passage on the swell, the Shark Reef dive on the lay day, and Pacific Harbour to disembark. The captain calls the passage on the forecast.

When is the surf season in Fiji

Can anyone surf Cloudbreak
Access to Cloudbreak and the surrounding breaks has been open to all since Fiji's 2010 surfing decree. New legislation passed in August 2026 will return commercially used reefs to their customary owners once it commences, and user fees may then apply. Your crew and the central agent handle arrangements.
Do I need a wetsuit in Fiji
No. Water sits between 24 and 29 degrees through the year. Boardshorts and a long sleeve rash vest for the sun are enough, with a thin spring suit for dawn sessions in winter if you feel the cold.
Is there surf for intermediates
Yes. Namotu Left, Swimming Pools and Wilkes on smaller days suit intermediate surfers, and Restaurants is a long, lined up left when it is under head high. Cloudbreak and Frigates on a big day are for experienced surfers only.
Where does the yacht anchor
In the lee of Namotu or Tavarua for dawn access, in Musket Cove for a sheltered night, or on the sand patches inside the Cloudbreak reef in settled weather. Every break in the Mamanucas is minutes away by tender.
Which yacht goes to Fiji

HOW WE MAKE IT possible
Forty metres of Italian build with twelve guests in five cabins, eight crew and an executive chef. The tender runs surfers to the reef before sunrise and brings them back for breakfast. The boards ride in the garage alongside the eFoils, the jetski and the sea pool, so the non-surfers in the party have their own day on the water.
Fiji licenses foreign flagged yachts over eighteen metres for charter under its Superyacht Charter Act. The permit, the customs clearance at Lautoka or Port Denarau, the five percent charter levy and the surf access arrangements are handled by the crew and the central agent, not by you.
Pricing is the published weekly rate plus the advance provisioning allowance, which covers fuel, food, beverages and marina fees. The Fiji crossing is scheduled for the season, so there is no relocation charge for charters that begin and end in Fijian waters.
